An IPTV app for Android has to suit the screen it runs on, and Android covers three very different ones: a phone in your hand, a tablet on the sofa and a TV box driven by a remote. Some players handle all three; others are built for one and awkward on the rest. This guide matches the main players to each type of Android device, shows how to install and sign in from the Play Store, and covers what changes when you watch on a phone, from mobile data to casting to the TV.
Phone, tablet or TV: why the device decides
A phone and a tablet are driven by touch, so a good mobile player has large tap targets, swipe gestures and a layout that works upright or sideways. An Android TV or Google TV box is driven by a remote with arrow keys, so a good TV player lets you move around a long guide without ever needing to tap anything.
Google Play knows the difference. On an Android TV or Google TV device, the Play Store shows only apps built for TV, which is why a player you use on your phone can be missing when you search for it on the box. Several players solve this with separate TV and mobile editions.
The main IPTV apps on Android
IPTV Smarters Pro
The most widely used option across phone, tablet and TV. On Google Play it currently appears under the shorter name Smarters Pro, with a TV edition and a separate mobile edition. Both split the line-up into Live TV, Movies, Series and Catch-up, and both sign in with the Xtream login. Similar names and icons are common, so check the developer name and the last update date on the listing before installing.
TiviMate
The favourite on Android TV and Google TV boxes, with a fast guide grid and a layout designed for the remote. Its developer states that it is intended for TV devices and not designed for phones and tablets, so it is the wrong choice for a touch screen. The free version covers one playlist; TiviMate Premium adds favourites, catch-up and recording.
VLC for Android
Free, without adverts, and at home on phones, tablets and TV boxes. It opens the M3U link as a playlist, which makes it a quick way to test a login, but it has no TV guide or catch-up. Using VLC as an IPTV player shows where the stream option sits.
Kodi
Kodi is on Google Play for phones, tablets and TV devices. With the free PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on it reads the M3U link and guide address and builds a full guide grid. It shines on a tablet or TV, where the grid has room, and feels cramped on a small phone.
Other players
Search Google Play for “IPTV player” and you will find dozens more, including GSE Smart IPTV. Some are excellent, many are thin wrappers around adverts. A long update history, a developer website you can find, and support for both Xtream and M3U logins are good signs.
Which IPTV app on which Android device
| Device | First choice | Also works | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android phone | Smarters Pro, mobile edition | VLC, Kodi | Watch your data allowance away from Wi-Fi |
| Android tablet | Smarters Pro, mobile edition | Kodi, VLC | Kodi’s guide grid is comfortable on a large screen |
| Android TV or Google TV box, Nvidia Shield | TiviMate | Smarters Pro TV edition, Kodi | Built for the remote; the Android TV box guide covers the full setup |
| Chromecast with Google TV | TiviMate | Smarters Pro TV edition | Storage is small, so keep only the players you use |
| Fire TV on Fire OS | TiviMate | IPTV Smarters Pro | Installed with Downloader, not the Play Store |
Fire TV devices run Amazon’s own version of Android without Google Play, so they follow different steps; the best IPTV app for Firestick covers them.
Install and sign in from the Play Store
Find the right app
Open the Play Store, search for the player by name, and check the developer and the last update date on the listing before choosing Install.
Open it and pick the login type
Accept the terms, then choose the Xtream Codes API login if the app offers it. It gives you separate live, film and series sections and the TV guide in one step.
Enter your details exactly as sent
Type any name you like for the profile, then the username, password and server URL from our message. The server URL must include http:// at the start and the port number at the end, with no spaces.
Or paste the M3U link
If the app only takes a playlist, choose the M3U or playlist URL option and paste the link we sent. Copy and paste beats typing on a phone.
Let the first load finish
The first load of channels, films and the guide takes longer than later ones. Leave the app open until the guide fills in, then add your favourite channels.
For box-specific settings such as the buffer size and hardware decoder, see setting up IPTV on an Android TV or Google TV box. For the Smarters login screen field by field, see the IPTV Smarters Pro setup guide. If the app crashes or shows an empty list, the Smarters troubleshooting guide lists the fixes in order.
Watching on a phone: data, battery and screens
- Mobile data goes quickly. Live TV over mobile data adds up fast: an hour of HD can run to several gigabytes, and 4K far more. On mobile data, pick lower-quality versions of a channel where the list offers them, and keep long films for Wi-Fi.
- Your phone is a screen. While it plays, it counts towards the screens on your plan. On a one-screen plan, the phone and the living-room TV cannot play at the same moment; adding a screen fixes that for the rest of the term.
- Battery and heat. Streaming video works the processor and the radio hard. For a long programme, plug in and avoid leaving the phone on a soft surface.
- Picture-in-picture. Some players keep the video in a small floating window when you switch apps. Look for it in the player’s settings; Android’s own Picture-in-picture permission for the app must be allowed.
Casting from an Android phone to the TV
The smoothest way to get IPTV onto the TV is to install the player on the TV device itself and sign in there: the same login works on every device. Casting is handy for a quick look, with a few limits.
- Cast button in the app. Some players, and VLC on recent versions, can send the stream to a Chromecast or Google TV device. The TV then fetches the stream itself and the phone becomes a remote.
- Mirroring the whole screen. Android’s Cast option in Quick Settings (called Smart View on Samsung phones) copies everything on the phone to the TV. Picture quality depends on your Wi-Fi, and the phone must stay awake.
- Screens. Either way it is one stream, so it counts as one screen.
Installing an app from outside the Play Store
Some Android TV boxes, especially uncertified ones, have no Play Store. A few player developers offer an installer file on their own website for exactly that case. Android then asks you to allow the browser or file manager to install unknown apps, a permission you can switch off again afterwards.
Only ever install a player from its developer’s own website. Modified “premium unlocked” copies passed around online can carry adware and stop updating. If a device cannot get a genuine player at all, a certified Google TV device is usually the cheaper fix in the long run.
Test on your own devices first
The quickest way to choose is to install two players, add the same login to both and use each for an evening. Our 24-hour free trial gives you a full login with 25,000+ channels for that test, on your phone and your TV at once if you like. When you are ready, every plan and price is published, for one to five screens.
Short answers on this topic
Can I use TiviMate on an Android phone?
Not comfortably. TiviMate's developer says the app is intended for Android TV devices and not designed for phones and tablets, so its remote-control layout is awkward on a touch screen. On a phone, use the mobile edition of Smarters Pro, Kodi or VLC instead, and keep TiviMate for the TV box where it works best.
Which IPTV app works on both an Android phone and a TV box?
IPTV Smarters Pro, listed on Google Play as Smarters Pro, has separate mobile and TV editions with the same layout, so the whole household finds things in the same place. Kodi and VLC also run on both. Your login works in all of them, so you can mix players: TiviMate on the box and Smarters on the phone is a common pairing.
How much mobile data does IPTV use on a phone?
A lot. An hour of HD can use several gigabytes, and 4K far more. On mobile data, choose lower-quality versions of a channel where the list offers them, and save films and long programmes for Wi-Fi. Check your allowance before watching a whole evening away from home on mobile data.
Does watching on my Android phone use one of my screens?
Yes, while it is playing. Each stream playing at the same moment counts as one screen, whether it is on a phone, a tablet or a TV box. Having the app installed on several devices uses nothing. If your phone and the main TV often play together, a two-screen plan avoids interruptions.
Why can't I find my IPTV app on my Android TV box's Play Store?
Because the Play Store on Android TV and Google TV only shows apps built for TV. A player you use on your phone may have a separate TV edition under a slightly different name, or no TV version at all. Search for the TV edition, check the developer, or pick a TV-first player such as TiviMate.
